HI-

We've got a company picnic coming up, and we have some ardent
espresso drinkers. I'm thinking of getting a moka pot and
bringing it to the picnic.

I'm wondering if they might work on a barbeque grill, and if
so, what steps I need to take to prevent the pot from melting.

You'd be better off w/ an alcohol burner , camping stove or somesuch. Some
gas grills have sideburners. Putting it on the main grill would melt the
handle unless you removed it completely and the heat is hard to regulate.

He could wrap the handle in something. A bit of asbestos, maybe?-)

Well - I might be able to borrow a Korean style portable butane
gas burner.

OTOH - the picnic is going to be in Golden Gate Park. It might
be easier just to find a Peet's in San Francisco and get one
of those boxes. However - I was looking forward to seeing if
I could do the moka pot thing. :-)

You can buy a small hand held torch that runs on butane. You can buy these
real cheap at Harbor Freight. If you need something bigger use a propane
torch.

Of course if you are just going to a pic-nic, just make some nice iced
coffee and chill.

About the time I had mastered getting the toothpaste back in the tube, then
they come up with this striped stuff.

Bingo - butane stove would be just the ticket. You might have to improvise a
wind screen if it is windy.
