Anyone used IMEX CR100 roaster

Has anybody had any experience with the IMEX CR100 coffee bean roaster that
they can comment on?

I purchased one when it was going cheap (I got mine when it was $100 off the
retail price). I haven't used it because I haven't used up all the roasted
beans yet, but I assume it's a good roaster because other people have said
that it does the job well. Someone even mentioned it did better than a
Heathenware roaster. Coffeegeek reviews pointed me towards the CR100 in the
first place, but I'd like more input.

Use http:groups.google to search on "cafe rosto" or "rosto," the North
American trade name to get the alt.coffee post on the machine.

Mine lasted 18 months before it burnt out. I didn't replace it, I now use
poppers. But while it lasted it was wonderful. the timer, including a
cooling cycle was great. From memory I think they are made in Korea

I actually have three of them and they all work well once you tune them in
with the use of some alu-foil.
Have a look at my users report at www.netspresso.com

I use the CR100 (220V model) since three months now. I use the
stainless measuring cup to block the exaust during the later part of
the roast. By that and measuring the temp I have a nice control over
the roast. I can close down if the roast proceeds to slow and open if
it is to fast. Works fairly well but I need a thermometer.

The CR100 is IMHO not a good roaster to learn on. The FR+ was much
better for that. With the beans from the FR+ I never got a less than
outstanding remark for my beans. From the CR100 I recieved some
"What's the fuss about"

To get the best use out of the CR100, I would like to suggest to have
at least:
A light to shine into the roast chamber to have a repeatable vision on
the beans
A thermometer to see if the roast stalls
A scale to avoid overload
Heatproof ears as the second crack can best be heard comming from the
exaust 8^)
For the learning phase: Beans which are best dark roasted to go until
first sign of oil and avoid jucky underroasts

A shop vac is preferable, but the brush does a fairly good job too

To the OP:
If your roasted beans are older than a week since roasting -> discard
them. Once I tried my first realy fresh roast I was hooked, totaly
hooked.

A last remark on the CR100, the lid doesn't survive a drop from waist
height on a tile floor. I haven't found a spare parts supply in Europe
yet. My emergency lid works fine though but I can't roast by sight
anymore ...

Have fun and Pfüati

I use an Imex to roast about three times a week. It performs well and
is not prone to the bearing and other problems that have haunted the
HWP. However, I did go through two heating elements before this one -
partly due to my efforts to trick the machine into roasting in cold
weather, and partly because the heating elements burned out pretty
readily. Either I have become more adept or the current heating
element is more durable; I have been using the machine regularly for
about six months without any trouble.

Ignore all the stuff on the Imex/Rosto site about it being smokeless.
Not true. But it does do a respectable job of home roasting, better
than any unmodified popper I have ever used.

They are quite good. Roast while its cooler. Mine i dial to 6 1/2 mins for
first 6 for subsequant roast. i try to get second crack to start just as it
hits cool down. First crack starts about 2 mins to go. If you roast while
its hot middle of the day its all done in about 3 mins way too fast.

If you are interested in a green bean buy co-op and live in Australia, (by
you message properties you do) ;o) email me snakeoil AT ncable DOT net DOT
au . Ill fill you in on the details. We are on to our 3rd and 4th bags.
