Other than one mention on CoffeeGeek and one in Google I haven't found much
info on this machine other than it's French. Does that say enough?

I won this machine on ebay, it's a 1998 'completely refurbished'??? non-pod
machine. The seller is an authorized service center for Unic and is
throwing in a manual.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2580588428&category=25363&rd=1

Now I wasn't trying to win this as I was bidding on several machines, mostly
singles but I ended up with this one going for a lot less than I though a
double would go for. It's got an 11 quart boiler! Anyone want to come over
for coffee? <g> There is the small detail of running 220V to the room (or
possibly running a pigtail from the dryer but I'm equipped. So what if the
electric panel is full and I have to add a sub panel. Cha Ching$

Once I get it set up I can PID my Sylvia and compare. I'll be thoroughly
pissed if PID'd Sylvia produces better shots. But then I can resell the
Unic.........

If I won that auction and had to accept delivery of a unit that size,
my finacee would quite throw my ass to the curb and possibly run a
220V extension cord so that I could power it up and sleep on it for
the heat at night.

$710 for that unit. Unbelievable. Congrats!

Maybe time for a new fiancee? <g>

My wifes words were "just exactly what will this machine do that the other
one won't?"
My response was ......duh, umm, better temperature control? and remember
last year when we had that party and I was stuck with Sylvia trying to push
out 20 cappas? I kept having to fill the reservoir and, and,....."

Wife rolls eyes, walks away.

Gary,
Sorry I don't have any personal experience with this particular machine but
it does SEEM like a good price. (Nice sniping job anyway)

What I can tell you from personal experience is that true commercial
machines are monsters in a private residence. Unless you own a home like
Bill Gates they will certainly dominate a room. I think you will could do OK
to resell it or maybe even feel out the seller to see if he REALLY wants to
sell it to you at that price. (He may feel he could get more for it.) You
might be better off to offer to pay his auction costs and see if he will let
you off the hook. By the time you start adding up shipping charges and costs
of making electrical modifications to your home you will have a good deal of
money into it. Then there is the problem of making adequate use of a machine
with that size and capacity. I have a hard time justifying my 1 group
commercial unit and its relatively small compared to your recent purchase.

Sorry I couldn't give you any input on this machine but if it were me I
would see if you could maybe sweet talk your way out of it. It might be best
for all parties in this case. OR you could see if that guy you sniped it
from may want it and you could make up the difference in your bid versus
his.

My $.02

With shipping it only came to $830. The electric hook-up is a no-brainer
for me and I already have most of what I need (being in the construction
biz). I have a separate room for my coffee habit (was previously kicked out
of the kitchen) though I do share it with the washer/dryer/waterheater but
it's still a 13'x13' room. When I remodelled the room I set up a
water/drain just for a plumbed-in commercial machine (how's that for
premeditated purchase?) so that's already taken care of. When it's all said
and done I'll have less than a grand into the machine. There are a few here
that have spent well more than $3K for their machine and a lot more to get
it hooked up but I won't mention any names (but he live in a ski resort
town<g>)

I'll use is for a while and then if it doesn't fit into my needs I'll sell
it. I might lose a few dollars but it's cheaper than the new truck I've
been wanting that I'm not allowed to buy <(;-(

Thanks for the $.02.
Want to come over for coffee? For that matter, with this machine I could
probably invite everybody over for coffee........

Good Point !
Sounds like you're ready for your new family member. -:)

You won't lose any money on it, and since you have the rest of the bases
covered. Let er rip! Nice machine at that price for sure.

Will it be ready to use by early January?

With ebay the seller has 30 days to get the item to me. I would hope it
comes much sooner as I paid within an hour of winning but then it is the
holiday season. I honestly don't think I'll have it up an running that
soon :-(

Ouf! I think you got a really good deal. I didn't find any current
U.S.-based sites with that machine listed, but on an Australian site, the
same model new retails for 6710 AUD including tax. That's about $4,960 US.

Here's the URL:

I checked out prices extensively and also communicated with the seller
before bidding. The thing that caught my eye on this one was that there was
no reserve. Rare. It is possible that they took it in for service and the
original owner never came to pick it up.

The picture shows the side panel missing which I just saw. I'll have to
ask the seller about it. Still a good price I think if it really has been
profesionally refurbished.

Thanks. I had found this and skimmed it briefly as it is a single group. I
just re-read it and have high hopes for the machine I'm getting.
