Hi all,,, and of course Happy Holidays to all of you.

I have decided to look into opening a coffee roasting shop. Knowing that a
love for coffee will just not suffice in supporting my goal I am seeking
information on learning the craft of small batch roasting. Does anyone know
of seminars or books on store roasting-blending, etc??

Any information is greatly apreciated!!

James Enman

P.S.

The know whereabouts of a used shop roaster would be helpfull as well!!

join the roasters guild, and pronto, that would be my advice! they have
a nice website, and are very friendly people.

they live for fine coffee; a high-spirited crowd, i'd say.

carl staub runs an advanced seminar in sparks, nevada... (agtron
systems)

coffeeper might run a seminar, but i'm not sure.
john gant, at gimme coffee in ithaca ny, might do some private
consulting...

I've read the Roasters Guild website and one of the membership
requirements is that "Roasting must be an integral part of your
profession." If someone (like the OP) is looking to get into the
roasting business, but is not yet in it, would the Roasters Guild
grant them membership??

The Guild seems like a great organization to join, but there are some
folks out there who want information and want to put their toe in the
water first before diving into coffee roasting as a profession.

That's true, but the RG forum -- at least one portion -- is open to anyone
interested in roasting and appears to be the most active forum there.

yeah, that's been one of the issues that remains to be sorted out.
how do you get in, if you're not already "in"?

http://www.diedrichroasters.com/workshops.htm

It's a good introduction to commercial roasting
and includes seminar materials, two days of
information, and an opportunity
to roast on a full-size commercial machine.
