Need to buy some Kona for some really good customers. Anybody by
chance tried either or maybe both of the above's new crop. If so any
significant difference. Both have very similiar prices for 5/10#
quantities.

thanks

I haven't tried the new crop, but have had coffee from both. I do not think
they are interchangeable, though of course it depends on your standard of
comparison: they are quite similar when compared to an Ethiopian, just as a
Kona and an Ethiopian will be similar when compared to an Earl Grey.

Greenwell is a much bigger operation, with factory tours and big roadside
signs and so on.

Well, Cea and Bob are wonderful people, so I suppose I'm biased towards
Smithfarms (never met the Greenwell people).

I don't know anything about Green Well.

We absolutely love Smith Farms kona and their other products. The service is
excellent! We spent a day with Bob and Cea touring their farm in paradise. I
don't think there are any other coffee plants so well loved and hand farmed as
the coffee trees on their farm. In my next life I want to come back as a
coffee tree on Bob and Cea's farm!

Sorry, have been on the *freezing* mainland and just got back late
last night, but I <g> would suggest you try a half pound of ours and
of Greenwell's. Then you'll really know!

We are very different. Bob and I do it all here and as D. Ross said,
Greenwell's is a huge operation.

Cea

I haven't had Greenwell's Kona, but have had Captain Cook's Estate
Kona., & if Grenwells is a big/huge lower altitude open acreage Agra
farm with mechanical harvesting.., NO WAY!! the quality will match hand
picked & nurtured Smithfarms (Bob & Cea's) awesome Kona. It's the very
BEST I've ever had! {:-) {:-D
Cheers!
Craig.

I wouldn't put Greenwell's quite in this category; for example, their
altitude is not much lower than Smithfarms, and are tiny compared to (say)
Kauai Coffee.

Captain Cook (which I think is California-based) flooded the market some
time back with some fairly nondescript Kona at a very low price; I don't
think they did the region's name much good. Note however that there are
nominal Konas which are actually disgusting in the cup, so it could have
been worse.

IMO, there are only two criteria that you need to consider:

The first is that Smith Farms is a little tiny farm run by good folks who
are more than worthy of our support, and the second is that Smith Farms
has excellent coffee.

Even if Green Well's coffee is somewhat better (unlikely), the first
criteria carries the day for me.
