You can make a difference in the world every day, simply by purchasing coffee. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters of Vermont is introducing Heifer Hope Blend, a new organic coffee whose sales will help improve the lives of small-scale coffee farmers in Guatemala. Forty cents of every bag purchased will be given to Heifer International, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting hunger worldwide. The partnership between Heifer and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters will bring needed assistance to impoverished farmers of the La Voz area in San Juan la Laguna and other communities in Guatemala. Coffee prices today are so low that many small-scale farmers are unable to make a living growing coffee. With Heifer's help, the farmers at La Voz will learn to grow certified organic, shade-grown premium coffee. Green Mountain Coffee then will buy the coffee from the farmers at fair-trade prices - a guaranteed wage that is higher than what the farmers would get on the

A coffee bar owner in northern England tried to conduct face-to-face interviews with female job hunters while he was naked. David Richards was facing a jail sentence Thursday after he admitted inviting three female would-be baristas to Rioco's coffee bar in the city of York, then greeting them in the nude. The 53-year-old sent text messages to two teenagers, aged 15 and 16, and a woman in her 30s, who were interested in a job, and arranged to "interview" them on separate days, The York Press reported. When each applicant knocked on the door of his office, Richards was naked, Prosecutor Rob Galley told York Crown Court. He told them he was in the middle of getting dressed but then attempted to proceed with the job interview without any clothes on. All three of the shocked applicants fled the premises and complained to the police, who arrested the businessman. Richards initially protested his innocence, but on the day of his trial, he changed his plea and pleaded guilty to

JAMAICA'S COFFEE industry has been stymied due to the lack of a sustained presence in the marketplace to buoy the already exceptional reputation of Blue Mountain coffee, if for no other reason, against eventualities. This worldwide revered product has languished in the international market, overworking its natural attributes in a stand-alone way which has now left it to be warding off competition from other coffees lurking in the wings. The question has been asked from whence will come a promotional budget with strong diaspora overtones to keep Blue Mountain and Brand Jamaica in the face of the most discriminating global market. Mavis Bank coffee has started to take serious initiatives in this respect and now boasts a whopping $37m profit in three months or longer. What is unfortunate is that this has happened at a time when the Jamaica Coffee Growers' Association (JCGA) is being called upon to answer for allegations of 56,000kg of coffee, transferred from

Google Offers and Banana Republic are the first businesses to join Starbucks Corp in raising money for a U.S. job creation fund started by the world's biggest coffee chain late last year. Starbucks and the Opportunity Finance Network, a group of private financial institutions that make affordable loans to individuals and communities, introduced the "Create Jobs for USA" fund in October. Starbucks Chief Executive Officer Howard Schultz said the fund would help compensate for a lack of national political leadership on unemployment. "We can't wait for Washington," he said. "We need to do more on our own. Schultz said he was in discussions with other potential partners about expanding Create Jobs for USA. The fund already has raised more than $7.5 million and the two new partnerships could bring in another $4 million. The total amount would support about $80 million in lending -- enough to help create or sustain more than 3,800 jobs, Starbucks said.

The purchase is the latest swoop by Japanese companies into commodities assets in Latin America and elsewhere, where profitability has been helped by relatively high prices for grains such as soy and corn, sugar and, in particular, coffee. Two months ago, Mitsubishi bought the same size stake in South American grains producer Ceagro CEGR.UL, which is controlled by Argentina's Los Grobo. Ipanema Coffees, a producer of specialty beans marketed to the upper end of the coffee market, was Mitsubishi's second agricultural investment this year in Brazil, a country it describes as strategic to its plans. Growers in Brazil, the world's top coffee producer, have profited as prices have risen due to tight supplies. Coffee prices doubled in 2010, and while prices have fallen in the last six months to about $1.85 a lb, they remain nearly 60 percent higher than the average for the past 10 years. Mitsubishi, Japan's largest trading house, said growing demand for coffee was a motive for

A cup of coffee and a morning workout may significantly reduce your risk of skin cancer, according to a new animal study presented Tuesday at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in Chicago. The researchers, from Rutgers Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, wanted to evaluate the effects of both caffeine and exercise on mice that were at high risk for developing skin cancer. Previous research has shown that mice given either caffeine or an exercise wheel had a reduction in skin cancers. The researchers exposed high risk mice to ultra violet B light, which is known to cause skin cancer, and then gave one group of mice caffeine (in water), one group an exercise wheel, a third group caffeine plus an exercise wheel, and a control group plain water for 14 weeks. Results showed that mice who got a dose of caffeine and exercised on the wheel had 62 percent fewer non-melanoma skin cancers. The size of those tumors also decreased by 85 percent compared with

Caffeine consumption among expectant or new mothers does not appear to affect the nighttime sleeping habits of their newborns, new Brazilian research indicates. The conclusion is based on an analysis of sleeping patterns among more than 4,200 infants until the age of 3 months, in light of the caffeine-consumption habits of their mothers both before and after delivery. Researchers looked at two beverages: coffee and mate, a hot tea-like beveragepopular in their area. The team, led by study author Dr. Ina Santos of the postgraduate program in epidemiology at the Federal University of Pelotas in Brazil, reports its observations online and in the May print issue of Pediatrics. The authors note that it is very common for newborns to experience nighttime awakenings, and that caffeine consumption has long been linked to sleep disruption and insomnia among adult drinkers. To see whether caffeine consumption among pregnant women and nursing mothers affects their child's sleep,

Charles Back, owner of the Fairview Wine and Cheese farm, has once again pioneered an innovative world-first. Those who have visited the Fairview farm and seen the signature Goat Tower, will be forgiven for assuming the goats are solely used for goats milk and cheese. After years of experimentation, Fairview has launched a new, rather unusual variety of coffee, made from coffee berries eaten and then passed by goats. Owing to this unique production process, the aptly named Goffee, has astounded nutritionists with its health benefits. During a visit to Indonesia in 2008 Back developed a love of civet coffee, one of the world's most expensive varieties of coffee made from the beans of coffee berries which have been eaten by the Asian Palm Civet. Intrigued by this method of coffee-making he began researching the subject of coffee-making further and enrolled in a Barista course. Back says, "My trip to Indonesia inspired me and got me thinking about the possible relationship

The results are in, and Jones Coffee Roaster has been named the best place for coffee in West Hollywood. Jones, which opened at the end of last year, received a 45 percent of the vote to beat its close competitor, Angela's Coffee (which received 41 percent of the vote). The family business of 15 years opened up its second location on the bottom floor of the new West Hollywood Library in November 2011. What makes Jones' coffee so special? Nancy Houang, the coffee shop's manager, said it all comes down to the beans. Sixty percent are sourced from a family plantation down in Guatemala, and the rest are from all over the world. "There is no comparison! Jones Coffee rocks!" Wayne Schmus said in the comments section that accompanied the poll. Their standard coffee menu includes espressos for $2 and cappuccinos ranging from $3 to $4.50 Review or rate Jones yourself on Patch Places!
