At the annual Exposition thousands of coffee professionals from more than 40 countries will converge at the Oregon Convention Center to focus on specialty coffee, learn about the latest innovational trends and products in the coffee marketplace, and engage with fellow industry professionals for the ultimate purpose of delivering a better experience for coffee drinkers. Locally based Event sponsors and SCAA member companies have events planned around the city to celebrate the first time the Exposition has come to Portland. Coffee prices fell Friday on expectations that Brazilian growers will produce a bountiful harvest later this year. Coffee for May delivery fell 2.95 cents to finish at $1.8235 per pound. The price has fallen 19.3 percent this year on the prospect that global inventories could expand. Brazil's crop appears to be in good condition, prompting many traders to speculate that growers will have a good harvest in about three months. That could ease concerns about reports of lower coffee production in Colombia, analysts said. Sterling Smith, a market analyst at Country Hedging LLC, thinks that the price could fall into a range between $1.65 per pound to $1.70 per pound, but noted that could be offset by strong overall demand. Despite the falling futures prices, consumers aren't likely to get a break at the retail level because manufacturers are paying higher costs to produce and ship their products, he said.

The coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari), is considered one of the most serious pests in coffee plantations worldwide. Infestations of this small beetle are difficult to combat; most of the insect's lifecycle is completed inside coffee berries, making insecticide penetration and contact difficult. Female beetles bore holes into developing berries attached to the tree through the blossom scar and create 'galleries' where they remain and deposit their eggs. The developing larvae feed on the bean or endosperm of the seed, reducing yields as well as the quality of coffee and its price. In "Implementing an Integrated Pest Management Program for Coffee Berry Borer in a Specialty Coffee Plantation in Colombia," a free, open-access article appearing in the Journal of Integrated Pest Management, the authors discuss efforts to implement an integrated pest management (IPM) program for coffee berry borer in the Huila region of Colombia.

Coffee producers in the heart of this region that grows top-notch beans learned a tough lesson in 2001, the last time prices sank: Even gourmet coffee can leave a bitter taste. This time, they are better prepared. Prices of arabica beans, the kind coveted by connoisseurs for their mild taste, have hit 17-month lows. Rather than spending their profits on luxuries like new cars and the latest electronic toys, as many once did, growers from Costa Rica to Mexico to Colombia are diversifying to protect themselves from cyclical declines like this one.The efforts of some Latin American farmers to lessen their reliance on coffee has pinched supplies of high-end arabica, which undergoes a rigorous and labor-intensive washing process, even as global demand has increased. Consumers in emerging markets are thronging coffee shops in increasing numbers. Without a sustained increase in output from Latin America, the biggest source of these sought-after coffee beans, a shortfall could

If you have been considering coffee as an unhealthy beverage and a lean person to be healthy, doctors will tell you otherwise. Though coffee is associated with pancreatic cancer and ulcer, now the drink is being endorsed as a saviour for those suffering with liver diseases. And being thin too doesnt mean fit as 15% of non-alcoholics have fatty liver and are slim. Dr Fabio Marra, department of medicine, University of Florence, Italy, in a talk with TOI said, There have been clinical and experimental studies which have validated that coffee lowers the risk of liver fibrosis (a condition when organ gets scarred). However, non-alcoholic fatty liver has no symptoms. So, we recommend regular check ups followed by numerous screenings like ultrasound." Deliberating at the international liver summit, Dr T Mohan of Apollo Hospital, Delhi, said, The fatty liver is mainly caused due to metabolic syndrome. However, it is usually associated with junk food and sedentary lifestyle.

Speculation is mounting that the Nestle owned Nespresso operation in Australia, which markets a proprietary coffee system promoted by George Clooney, is set to start selling their own coffee machines in Australia in a move that could impact several coffee machine manufacturers. During the past week a major Nespresso coffee machine manufacturer in Australia has approached ChannelNews claiming they are concerned that the Nestle owned Company will start selling their own coffee machines and that current manufacturers will be denied access to the proprietary Nespresso coffee system which is based around capsules that have to be purchased either online or via a Nespresso store. What is not known is whether Nespresso has a legal right under Australia Competition & Consumer laws to stop vendors from offering a coffee machine that allows a consumer to use a Nespresso purchased capsule. Coffee giant Starbucks Corporation (SBUX) recently announced plans to launch the Verismo system, a premium machine which will allow customers to prepare Starbucks-quality espresso and coffee drinks at home, a cup at a time. The Verismo single cup coffee machine will be available by fall 2012 and is a major step by the company to take a share of the premium single-cup segment, which is the fastest growing market in the coffee industry. The premium single cup segment grew more than 135% over last year in the US and is expected to become an $8 billion market globally. The machine will allow customers to brew espresso based beverages and milk-based beverages on their own, at their workplace or at home. The Verismo system will be sold online, at some Starbuck retail stores and also in some specialty stores in US, Canada and in other unspecified international markets. Dear President Obama, Can you believe the nerve of employers? Many of them still seem to think that they should be allowed to determine the benefits they offer. I guess they haven't read your 2,000-page health law. It's the government's job now. That's a good thing, too. Employers for too long have been able to restrict our access to essential health services like contraception by making us pay some of the bill. Really, it's amazing that we aren't all dead. Now, thanks to you, we'll enjoy free and universal access to preventative care just like workers do in Cuba. Even so, there are still many essential benefits that the government must mandate to make the U.S. the freest country in the world. Fitness club memberships. Most doctors agree that exercising is one of the best ways to prevent disease. However, gym memberships can run between $240 and $1,800 per year. Such high prices force us to choose between exercising and buying groceries. While we could walk or jog outside,
